Music Exams
Some of my students learn an instrument purely for their own enjoyment. They are satisfied and happy with learning the skills required for each level without ever sitting an exam. This is an individual choice and I always support what is best for each person.
I have other students who enjoy the challenge of sitting music exams. A music exam is an exciting opportunity to perform your pieces to a professional musician and gain in-depth feedback and an award for your performance outside of your lessons. Performance standards required to pass these exams are high and many hours of home practice is required between lessons to achieve your pass.
I routinely enter candidates for examination with Trinity College (Acoustic, Classical and Rock and Pop), Rockschool (Grades and Performance), and RGT Exam Boards. These are all internationally recognised exams that have the additional incentive of awarding valuable UCAS points for passing Grades 6-8.
These exams start at Initial/Debut Level then progress through Grades 1-8. Most young children age 6+ will be ready to start working at the Initial/Debut level after a few months of group tuition on all styles of guitar and ukulele. It can take 6-12 months for young children ages 7+ to be ready to work at Initial level on Piano or Keyboard. These timings are a guideline only and it varies for each child. For example a child who is 7+ years of age and enjoys weekly lessons but does little or no home practice will take several years before they can sit an exam. A child of the same age and ability with a regular practice routine at home may have sat an Initial Grade exam within a year.
Occasionally my adult students like to sit exams too!
Instruments that I offer examination preparation for are:
- Acoustic Guitar
- Classical Guitar
- Electric Guitar
- Bass Guitar
- Ukulele
- Piano
- Keyboard
These exams require a separate additional one off fee for examination entry which is not included in lesson prices.
